Prime Minister Sihasak Orders Close Monitoring and Evacuation Preparations Amid Middle East Tensions

Bangkok: Prime Minister Sihasak has issued orders for close monitoring of the escalating situation in the Middle East, with preparations in place for the immediate evacuation of Thai citizens if deemed necessary. This directive comes amid heightened concerns following the cessation of a ceasefire and resurgence of conflict in the region.

According to Thai News Agency, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sihasak Phuangketkaew, held a meeting with the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on July 21st in Manila to evaluate the unfolding tensions. The meeting underscored the importance of ensuring the safety of Thai nationals residing in the Middle East. Sihasak highlighted that during past conflicts, successful evacuations of Thai citizens from Iran were conducted, and similar readiness is essential in the current scenario.

Sihasak stressed the need for each Thai Embassy to assess the situation critically and prepare for all possible outcomes, especially concerning the potential evacuation of Thai citizens. He assured that adequate preparations are in place to address any necessary actions swiftly.

In addition to the Middle East situation, Sihasak shared insights from his participation in the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Summit. The discussions focused on regional and global security, emphasizing ASEAN's pivotal role. The ongoing situation in Myanmar was also a topic of concern, with Thailand advocating for continued dialogue and implementation of ASEAN's five-point consensus. Sihasak highlighted Thailand's strategic interests, particularly in border security and trade, necessitating direct dialogue with Myanmar.

He further elaborated on the need for Myanmar to engage in a reconciliation process, mentioning the transfer of Aung San Suu Kyi from prison as a sign of progress. Sihasak expressed Thailand's willingness to facilitate dialogues involving ethnic minorities and the Myanmar government, aiming for peace and unity.

As ASEAN evaluates Myanmar's potential re-entry, Sihasak emphasized the importance of realistic assessments and progress indicators. He asserted that ASEAN must support Myanmar's gradual reintegration if it aligns with the consensus points, urging a balanced approach that includes humanitarian aid and reconciliation efforts.

Sihasak concluded by reiterating Thailand's stance on Myanmar, advocating for continued dialogue and cooperation to prevent geopolitical power struggles in the region. He called for Myanmar to respond to ASEAN's concerns, highlighting the significance of credible dialogue processes to ensure progress and stability.
