Proud Thai Kitchen Initiative Provides 20,000 Meals to Flood Victims

Bangkok:According to Thai News Agency, the Proud Thai Kitchen project, also known as Krua Phumjai Thai, has distributed over 20,000 servings of sticky rice with fried chicken and pork to assist those affected by flooding. This initiative highlights the importance of traditional Thai dishes in disaster relief efforts.

Sticky rice with fried chicken and pork holds a special place in Thai culture, rooted in ancient food preservation techniques. Traditionally, meat was marinated with spices and herbs such as garlic, coriander root, and pepper, then fried until dry, making it ideal for long-term storage and travel. This evolved into the popular "Hatyai Fried Chicken," known for its crispy texture and served with fried shallots and sticky rice, a favorite across Thailand.

In times of disaster, this dish offers practical benefits, providing high energy from sticky rice, which is a complex carbohydrate and digests slowly, keeping individuals satiated longer. The chicken and pork offer quality protein essential for energy restoration and tissue repair, crucial for those dealing with the stress and fatigue of flood conditions.

The meal's portability and durability make it especially suitable for distribution in flood-hit areas where refrigeration may not be available. Its comforting aroma and flavor bring a sense of relief and happiness to victims, enhancing its value beyond nutrition.

The project saw enthusiastic participation from volunteers and GrabFood riders, who helped in the preparation and distribution process, ensuring cleanliness and quality under the supervision of "Nong Tanjai," part of the team led by Ms. Suksomruay Wantaniyakul, Deputy Minister of Interior. The overwhelming response has led to the meal being affectionately called the "Fried Chicken of the Heart."

This effort underscores the role of sticky rice with fried chicken and pork in Thai society, from its origins in preservation methods to its status as a staple in community gatherings and disaster relief, symbolizing unity and support in challenging times.
