Bangkok: A unique plant species known as "Mysterious Appendages" is currently captivating visitors at Tai Rom Yen National Park in Surat Thani Province. The plant, described as a tiny, symbiotic wonder, is flourishing along the "San Yen-San Khuha" nature trail, with its distinctive flowers emerging from the forest floor's layers of fallen leaves.
According to Thai News Agency, the plant, scientifically named *Thesmiia javanica JJSm*, is part of the Thismiaceae family. Measuring just 2-8 centimeters tall, it lacks chlorophyll, making photosynthesis impossible. Instead, its survival depends on a symbiotic relationship with mycorrhizal fungi in the soil, classifying it as a "mycoheterotrophic plant." The flowers, which bloom during the rainy season, are tubular or pitcher-shaped, featuring a translucent white hue with long yellow to orange appendages, resembling miniature lanterns. These flowers are short-lived, adding to the plant's rarity and allure.
The San Yen-San Khuha Nature Trail provides an ideal setting for exploring the plant's habitat, offering a rich rainforest environment where other rare plants and creatures thrive. The trail is a prime spot for nature walks, photography, and studying the biodiversity inherent to southern Thailand's forests.
