Shark Attack Claims Life Off Western Australia Coast

Perth: A shark attack has resulted in a death in Australia. A shark attack on a human while he was enjoying activities at sea off the coast of Western Australia on Saturday (May 16) resulted in a fatality, marking the second fatal shark attack in Australia this year.

According to Thai News Agency, the incident occurred late Saturday local time (May 16) at Horseshoe Reef, north of Rottnest Island, a popular tourist destination located about 31 kilometers west of Perth, the capital of Western Australia. The victim, a 38-year-old man, was spearfishing with friends when he was bitten on both legs approximately 80 meters from shore and only 20 meters from his boat.

His body was brought aboard a rescue boat to Jordy Bay pier. Despite police and emergency medical personnel performing CPR to try and save his life, they were unable to do so. The Perth Department for Primary Industries and Regional Development reported that the attacker was likely a great white shark, approximately 4 meters long.

Following the tragic incident, authorities in Western Australia issued an urgent warning urging residents and tourists to exercise extra caution when swimming or engaging in marine activities near Rottnest Island. Some nearby beaches were temporarily closed, and security personnel were deployed to closely monitor the situation. This marks the second fatal shark attack in Australia this year, following the attack on a 12-year-old boy off the coast of Sydney Harbour in January.
