Bangkok: "Siripong" investigates the Airport Rail Link malfunction, expects increased train frequency this evening, and orders full refunds for passengers.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Siripong Angkasakulkiat, Deputy Minister of Transport, conducted an inspection at the Airport Rail Link maintenance depot in Khlong Tan following a malfunction that disrupted services. Initial findings pointed to a technical issue with one train, which blocked the tracks and reduced service to one train per hour. Efforts are underway to move the damaged train and potentially increase the frequency of services by this evening, though a complete resumption of normal operations remains uncertain.
The Ministry of Transport, in collaboration with engineers, is investigating the incident's cause, focusing on a technical assessment. Meanwhile, the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has been instructed to deploy air-conditioned diesel railcars to serve key stations, including Hua Takhe, Hua Mak, Asok, and Makkasan. Additionally, the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) is coordinating with the Ministry to provide shuttle buses at the Makkasan Airport Rail Link station to assist affected passengers.
In terms of passenger assistance, the priority is to expedite departures. Passengers who purchased tickets will be eligible for full refunds and can utilize the additional BMTA bus services at no extra cost. Further relief measures are being considered as the situation develops.
Mr. Pichet Kunathamarak, Director-General of the Department of Rail Transport, also visited the site. He reported that the issue stemmed from a malfunction in the track switching system, which affected train control and led to a wheel derailment, trapping the train at the maintenance depot. Repairs are projected to take at least five hours, with efforts focused on restoring normal service by this evening. The Director-General emphasized the provision of full ticket refunds and the supply of alternative railcar services and shuttle buses to mitigate passenger inconvenience.
