Sophon Saram Calls for Decorum in Upcoming No-Confidence Debate

Accra:House Speaker Sophon Saram expects the timeframe for the no-confidence debate against the Prime Minister and 18 ministers to be finalized soon. He emphasized the importance of using respectful language during the proceedings, as the public is weary of political quarrels.

According to Thai News Agency, Sophon addressed the ongoing discussions about the debate’s duration, with the opposition seeking five days and the government preferring two to three days. The decision will be made after a meeting involving the opposition, government, and cabinet whips, following the Cabinet’s confirmation of the start date. This meeting aims to ensure all parties are prepared and respectful of each other’s viewpoints. Sophon has instructed the Deputy Secretary-General of the House of Representatives to organize this meeting, which he hopes will occur promptly to facilitate adequate preparation.

Sophon noted that the debate must focus on accusations related to the ministers’ official duties in the current government. He stressed the importance of credible accusations supported by evidence and urged all parties to engage in constructive dialogue without resorting to insults. Sophon believes that respectful language will foster agreement and lead to more productive parliamentary sessions.

He also mentioned that the timeframe for the debate is still uncertain and urged the parties to reach an agreement swiftly. The debate’s focus must remain on issues from the current government, with any allegations supported by evidence. Sophon emphasized that the government should respond to accusations with clarifications rather than retaliatory insults.

Regarding the schedule of the parliamentary session, Sophon suggested it should not extend beyond midnight to maintain public engagement. He declined to comment on the conflict between MPs Rangsiman Rome and Suchada Sangtanasap, stating it was beyond his remit and urging all parties to respect their roles.
