Speaker of Parliament to Discuss Amendments to Drug Laws Amid Ongoing Rehabilitation Efforts

Khon kaen: The Speaker of Parliament is advancing initiatives to tackle the drug issue by preparing to discuss potential amendments to existing laws to better align with the current challenges.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Sophon Saram, President of the National Assembly, launched a drug addiction rehabilitation training course utilizing the FAST Model at Thanyarak Hospital in Khon Kaen. This initiative aims to bolster the skills of public health personnel in Buriram province. Mr. Saram also announced plans to deliberate on amending drug laws on June 22, 2026, to ensure they comprehensively cover prevention, suppression, and rehabilitation efforts.

Mr. Sophon Saram, President of the Parliament, presided over the opening of a training course focused on drug and substance abuse rehabilitation using the FAST Model. This course is part of the project titled 'United Efforts, Love and Faith: Integrated Solution to Drug Problems in Buriram Province.' The event saw participation from executives of government agencies and partner networks involved in drug prevention and control. The project aims to foster collaboration in preventing, treating, and rehabilitating drug and substance users in Buriram Province, while also enhancing the capacity of public health personnel to deliver standardized patient care, with a focus on treating drug users as patients. Thirty nurses and personnel from hospitals and community health centers in Buriram Province took part in the training.

Mr. Sophon emphasized that drug addiction impacts the quality of life and national development. Addressing this issue necessitates cooperation from all sectors, especially public health personnel. The training is expected to improve the capabilities of healthcare providers and address the shortage of nurses in drug-related fields in the region. The Speaker of Parliament also highlighted that the government is preparing to discuss the potential amendments to drug-related laws on June 22, 2026. This discussion aims to adapt the laws to the current context, including prevention, suppression, and comprehensive rehabilitation, with the goal of building strong, safe communities and enhancing people's quality of life in the long term.
