Suspect Apprehended in Bon Kai Arson Investigation

Pathum Wan:A suspect in the Bon Kai community arson case is currently being interrogated as forensic officers work to determine the fire's origin and gather evidence from the site.

According to Thai News Agency, the fire, which occurred in the densely populated Bon Kai community in Pathum Wan district, affected 79 households and a total of 321 people. The community comprises closely packed two-story wooden houses, and the narrow passageways contributed to the rapid spread of the fire. Fortunately, there were no initial reports of injuries or fatalities.

The investigation is ongoing, with preliminary inquiries suggesting the fire may have started in an abandoned two-story wooden house. Although unoccupied, the house was reportedly inhabited by a couple known for frequent arguments, with the man allegedly heard threatening to set the fire. The police have detained him for questioning.

Mr. Norathep Chuphol, Director of Pathumwan District, highlighted the challenges faced by firefighters due to the cramped environment and closely built houses. The presence of tall buildings surrounding the community further complicated efforts by obstructing smoke dispersal. The district has confirmed the operational status of eight fire hydrants in the area and has conducted surveys across all 17 communities in Pathumwan to ensure readiness for such emergencies. The Phatthana Bon Kai community, where the fire occurred, has experienced similar incidents before, with a significant fire in 2022 damaging approximately 30 houses.
