Thai Crew Member Dies Escaping Gunfire from Myanmar Military Vessel.

Phang Nga: Relatives mourned the loss of a 24-year-old boat mechanic who perished after jumping into the sea to escape gunfire from a Myanmar military vessel. The tragic incident unfolded when the Thai fishing boat he was aboard was pursued and fired upon by Myanmar forces near the border of Ranong Province and Myanmar.

According to Thai News Agency, the deceased, Mr. Worakorn, was a mechanic on the Duangtaweephon 99 fishing boat. He drowned after jumping into the water to evade the gunfire. The Myanmar military reportedly fired upon the fishing boat without warning, leading to his desperate attempt to escape. His family, deeply saddened by the loss, held a funeral in Phang Nga Province, where relatives and local officials paid their respects.

Grandma Wee, Mr. Worakorn’s grandmother, expressed her sorrow over the incident, recounting that her grandson was a responsible young man who preferred staying on shore. This was his first fishing trip, prompted by his father’s wish for him to gain experience. Despite
acknowledging the unclear maritime boundaries, she criticized the Myanmar military’s actions as excessive and unwarranted.

The incident has escalated diplomatic tensions, with 31 crew members being detained by the Myanmar Navy. The Thai government is actively working to secure their release. The fishing boat has been transported to Koh Song, opposite Ranong Province.

Prime Minister Paethongtarn Shinawatra has directed relevant agencies, including the Navy and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to expedite coordination with Myanmar to assist the detained Thai nationals. She also conveyed her condolences to the families affected and emphasized Thailand’s stance against violence.

Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Phumtham Vejchai stated that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has formally protested Myanmar’s use of force and demanded a thorough investigation. Negotiations are ongoing to ensure the safe return of the detained crew.

In response to the incident, the Thai Navy’s Third Naval Area Command has
deployed patrol vessels to safeguard Thai waters. This move aims to reassure fishermen and maintain territorial sovereignty. Myanmar’s actions were reportedly based on allegations that Thai fishing boats had entered Myanmar’s territorial waters, a claim under investigation.

Thai Foreign Minister Maris Sengiampong has expressed grave concern over the incident and will meet with the Myanmar Ambassador to discuss the matter. The focus will be on ensuring accountability and the release of the detained Thai crew members.

Efforts continue to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident, with Thai authorities committed to a peaceful resolution and the safe return of all affected individuals.
