Bangkok: Strong and courageous women are being called upon to contribute to a society of giving by donating blood during Thai Women's Day, from August 1 to 7.
According to Thai News Agency, the National Blood Centre of the Thai Red Cross Society is encouraging women across Thailand to celebrate Thai Women's Day by participating in a week-long blood donation drive. This initiative, themed "Strong and Brave Women Creating a Society of Giving: Donate Blood on Thai Women's Day," aims to replenish blood reserves and ensure the availability of safe blood for patients nationwide.
Associate Professor Dr. Dujjai Chaiwanichsiri, Director of the National Blood Centre, highlighted that Thai Women's Day, celebrated annually on August 1, was established by Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother, in 2003. This day recognizes the contributions of Thai women, showcasing their knowledge and abilities in national development, matching international standards. It acknowledges the diverse capabilities of Thai women, who have proven their potential as leaders in administration while also caring for their families and adapting to global innovations and changes.
The initiative invites healthy Thai women to lead by example in blood donation, contributing to maintaining sufficient blood supplies across the country. As a gesture of appreciation, women donating blood at the National Blood Centre on Henri Dunant Street will receive a cosmetics gift set. Additionally, donations can be made at 7 permanent blood donation stations and 12 national blood service centers nationwide.
The campaign also provides important guidelines for women considering blood donation. Women who are menstruating can donate if they are healthy and not experiencing pain or fatigue. Those taking birth control pills or with contraceptive implants can donate, provided certain conditions are met, such as the healing of wounds. However, women who have undergone specific procedures involving needles outside of a hospital setting should refrain from donating blood for four months.
