Manila: The Foreign Ministers of Thailand and South Korea have engaged in a series of bilateral discussions aimed at formulating a joint action plan to bolster trade and investment. These discussions took place within the framework of the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Manila, Philippines, focusing on enhancing economic connections between Thailand, South Korea, and the broader ASEAN region.
According to Thai News Agency, the discussions were spearheaded by Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sihasak Phuangketkaew, who met with South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun. As a dialogue partner and co-chair of the ASEAN-South Korea Foreign Ministers' Meeting, South Korea is collaborating closely with Thailand to upgrade their strategic partnership. The talks covered a range of cooperative efforts, including the implementation of the joint action plan focused on trade, investment, and supply chains, as well as promoting economic connectivity in the region.
Key areas emphasized during the discussions included the digital economy and technological advancements such as artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and digital human resource development. Security concerns like combating call center gangs, online fraud, and enhancing cybersecurity were also prioritized. Additionally, both sides expressed commitment to advancing cooperation on green energy and transitioning to a low-carbon economy to support sustainable regional development.
The two countries also exchanged views on regional issues, including the situation in Myanmar, the dynamics between Thailand and Cambodia, Indo-Pacific security, and reinforcing ASEAN Centrality. South Korea expressed gratitude to Thailand for its role as the ASEAN-South Korea relations coordinator, while Thailand reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining close cooperation with South Korea.
