Thailand Considers Small-Scale Nuclear Power to Enhance Energy Security

Manila:The increasing global demand for stable and clean energy has brought nuclear power back into the spotlight, particularly small-scale nuclear power plants (SMRs) as countries seek to balance energy security, environmental protection, and affordability. As the world faces fluctuating fossil fuel prices and geopolitical tensions, nations are re-evaluating their energy strategies.

According to Thai News Agency, Thailand is exploring the potential of nuclear power to complement renewable energy sources. While public concerns about safety and community impact remain, Associate Professor Dr. Thanyaporn Suntorntham, a foresight expert, emphasizes the importance of developing a clear regulatory framework. This framework should address safety issues, legislative measures, and the fair management of nuclear waste, alongside fostering comprehensive public understanding and communication.

In the next 5-10 years, small-scale nuclear power could serve as a means to test feasibility and build public confidence. Looking further ahead, over the next 15 years, if Thailand is committed to achieving its Net Zero energy goals, nuclear power might become a crucial element. It could support industries with the clean, secure, and competitively priced energy required in the global market.
