Thailand to Host 2026 IMF-World Bank Group Meeting, Aiming to Boost Global Economic Influence

Manila:Thailand's honor in hosting the 2026 IMF-World Bank Group Meeting (AM2026) highlights its emerging influence on the global stage. Associate Professor Dr. Piti Srisangnam, Executive Director of the ASEAN Foundation, described the event as Thailand's "financial Olympics," underscoring the significance of this opportunity for the nation.

According to Thai News Agency, the ability to gather leaders and high-level executives from 191 countries in Thailand showcases the transparency and stability of Thai financial institutions. This year's conference marks the first time it will be held outside of headquarters since the COVID-19 pandemic. Thailand aims to move from merely following global economic rules to setting the agenda, particularly by developing small-scale AI technologies to boost domestic job creation and productivity, reducing reliance on multinational corporations.

Thailand is increasingly positioning itself as a middle power, acting as a bridge between developed and developing countries. By leveraging cultural assets and friendly policies, the nation seeks to foster cooperation rather than applying pressure like a superpower. This approach is expected to enhance Thailand's bargaining power within ASEAN and on the international stage.

The long-term significance of hosting the AM2026 lies in the agreements and discussions that will shape Thailand's strategic direction for the next decade. This event marks a milestone in ensuring that Thailand not only remains on the global economic map but also plays a crucial role in steering the future of the world economy.
