Bangkok: Associate Professor Dr. Sukhum Nuansakul, former Rector of Ramkhamhaeng University, has highlighted the continued political influence of Thaksin Shinawatra following his release from prison.
According to Thai News Agency, Sukhum believes that Thaksin's return to freedom is set to invigorate Thai politics, given his enduring support from politicians and the Red Shirt group.
Sukhum pointed out that Thaksin's political prowess has not diminished, and his return is expected to rejuvenate and reorganize the Pheu Thai Party. He emphasized that Thaksin remains a sought-after figure in politics, with significant backing from political allies and the Red Shirt movement. Sukhum also expressed that political movements should be closely observed, particularly those involving individuals meeting Thaksin, which will reveal the existing political networks and influence.
Sukhum further asserted that Thaksin is likely to continue his efforts to assist former Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra in returning to Thailand. He noted that Thaksin's fighting spirit and determination would drive him to find ways to reverse the previous unsuccessful mission.
Regarding Thaksin's role in the Pheu Thai Party, Sukhum suggested that the party is hopeful for Thaksin's involvement in harmonizing the senior and junior members to strengthen the party's future endeavors. He also mentioned potential concerns about Yotsanulok Wongsawat's subdued presence since Thaksin's return.
Sukhum warned against underestimating older politicians, noting that figures like Chuan Leekpai and Wan Muhammad Nor Matha continue to play influential roles in Thai politics despite their age. He concluded that Thaksin's return marks a significant comeback for a key political figure, promising an intense and engaging political landscape in Thailand.
