Thongthong Chantrangsu Emphasizes Importance of Secret Ballot Voting Principles

Bangkok: "It's that simple!" Thongthong posted, explaining the principles of secret ballot voting: the system must be completely closed; no one should know!

According to Thai News Agency, Professor Emeritus Thongthong Chantrangsu, a lawyer, academic, and expert in cultural history, and former Dean of the Faculty of Law at Chulalongkorn University, shared his insights on the principle of secret ballot voting through a Facebook post. Chantrangsu emphasized the necessity of maintaining a completely closed voting system where no one, not even election commissioners or officials, should be able to identify how any voter has cast their ballot.

Chantrangsu reflected on his experiences as a freshman at Chulalongkorn University's Faculty of Law in 1973, where he studied Constitutional Law and Election Law under Professor Dr. Sompop Hotrakit, who was then the Secretary-General of the Council of State and Minister of Justice. This educational background provided him with a foundational understanding of the importance of secret voting.

He stressed that the diligence and security in designing the voting system must extend beyond just the day of voting, ensuring that the confidentiality of each vote remains intact indefinitely. This principle of secrecy is vital to uphold the integrity of the electoral process, ensuring that no one can trace how an eligible voter has voted, thereby preserving the fundamental democratic right to a secret ballot.
