Twelve Cambodian Nationals Arrested for Illegal Entry in Single Day

Chanthaburi: Twelve Cambodian nationals were arrested for illegally entering the country in a single day, highlighting ongoing border security challenges. The Royal Thai Navy apprehended the individuals, who were also found with illegal labor and drugs. The navy emphasized that this incident demonstrates the continued strict enforcement of border controls, countering rumors of relaxed restrictions.

According to Thai News Agency, Rear Admiral Parach Rattanachaiyapan, spokesperson for the Royal Thai Navy, stated that the Chanthaburi and Trat Border Protection Command, specifically the Chanthaburi Marine Corps Task Force, maintains 24-hour vigilance over the Thai-Cambodian border. On June 4, 2026, they intercepted 12 Cambodian nationals in two separate incidents in Pong Nam Ron District, Chanthaburi Province.

The first incident took place at 3:00 AM when authorities detained 10 Cambodian nationals, comprising five men and five women, in the Ban Laem area of Thep Nimit Subdistrict, Pong Nam Ron District. During questioning, the suspects admitted to originating from Banteay Meanchey Province, Cambodia, and illegally entering Thailand to seek construction work in Pathum Thani Province. They had each paid 3,000 baht to smugglers. Later, at 3:30 PM, authorities arrested two more Cambodian nationals, a man and a woman, in possession of methamphetamine (ice) in the same area. The suspects, from Battambang Province, intended to work in fruit orchards in Chanthaburi Province before their apprehension. All suspects were subsequently transferred to Ban Plaeng Police Station for further legal action.

These arrests underscore the economic challenges and lack of job opportunities in neighboring countries that drive individuals to risk illegal border crossings for employment in Thailand. This situation reaffirms Thailand's status as a major employment destination for migrant workers from neighboring countries, which contributes to ongoing attempts at illegal immigration along the Chanthaburi-Trat border.

The Navy spokesperson noted that illegal border crossings pose broader security risks, including drug trafficking and transnational crime. The recent case exemplifies the link between illegal immigration and drug possession, underscoring the necessity for strict border control measures.

Furthermore, this incident serves as evidence that the border areas under the Navy's jurisdiction remain under stringent control. There has been no easing of border restrictions, contrary to social media claims. If border controls were relaxed, individuals would not resort to natural routes, night-time crossings, or smuggling networks to evade detection.
