Amnesty Request for Thaksin Shinawatra Under Review

Baku:Chatchai Bangchawad, Permanent Secretary of the Prime Minister's Office and a member and secretary of the Committee for Promoting a Peaceful Society, has confirmed the receipt of an amnesty request for former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. The request, which seeks amnesty and acquittal from political charges, has reached the subcommittee chaired by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Justice.

According to Thai News Agency, the request is currently undergoing a screening process by the subcommittee. Mr. Chatchai noted that the review will involve consultations with the committee due to various legal considerations that need to be addressed.

Mr. Chatchai also mentioned that the petitions will be compiled with other similar requests, and discussions regarding the timeframe with the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Justice are required. The existing law provides a 180-day timeframe for such deliberations, which can be extended twice if necessary. The subcommittee will assess whether the petition meets the criteria for amnesty, considering the legal complexities involved.
