Bangkok: Anutin Charnvirakul has clarified the recent transfer of the Phuket governor, asserting that the decision was made to appoint someone capable of addressing conflicts and revitalizing the city's status as an economic hub. The governor has been reassigned to the role of deputy permanent secretary at the Ministry of Interior.
According to Thai News Agency, Anutin Charnvirakul, who is both the Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, revealed that the transfer proposal originated from the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior. He advised seeking more information from the Permanent Secretary, citing factors such as performance and seniority as considerations. Anutin acknowledged that government policy adjustments are crucial due to the ongoing challenges in Phuket, which have persisted despite his personal involvement.
Anutin highlighted that internal conflicts had been uncovered, prompting the need for a leader who could foster collaboration. He emphasized that Phuket's significance as a major economic hub requires addressing issues like land encroachment on beaches, eviction from public areas, mafia intimidation, and fraudulent claims. Anutin has instructed the Permanent Secretary to expedite investigations into these matters, aiming for progress within one to two months.
When questioned about potential investigations into Arsit Sampanrat, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Anutin stated that it would depend on the situation's specifics. He assured that if no changes were evident, action would be taken. Anutin also addressed concerns about influential figures in the area, recommending that details be sought from the Permanent Secretary. He expressed confidence in the Permanent Secretary's daily involvement and emphasized the importance of implementing a "Phuket Sandbox" model as a prototype for managing similar issues in other provinces.
