Bangkok: Anutin Charnvirakul, the Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, opened the doors of Government House to former British Prime Minister Tony Blair for a significant meeting centered on advancing Thailand's technological landscape. The meeting, which took place at 8:00 AM, also saw the presence of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Ekniti Nitithanprapas and Deputy Minister of Interior Polpeerapong Suwanchawi.
According to Thai News Agency, the discussions between Anutin Charnvirakul and Tony Blair aimed at exchanging views on technological transitions crucial for moving towards a new economy. The dialogue also touched upon strategies for transitioning to clean energy. This meeting set the stage for the Prime Minister's participation in the Gastech Bangkok 2026 event at the BITEC Convention Center, where he was scheduled to preside over the opening ceremony and deliver a keynote address. The gathering brought together LNG producers, global energy companies, buyers, traders, investors, infrastructure developers, and experts in AI and low-carbon energy.
Mr. Ekkapop Pienpises, spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, provided insights into the private discussions. He noted that the meeting was an opportunity for Anutin Charnvirakul to engage directly with Tony Blair, who leads an organization advising governments on economic transitions and technology, including artificial intelligence. The discourse focused on strategies for Thailand to progress beyond its current middle-income status, exploring improvements in income levels, the data center business, energy transition, and potential OECD membership, leveraging Thailand's robust infrastructure.
Tony Blair emphasized the potential of the data center business, suggesting that investment in this area could provide Thailand with valuable datasets, fostering opportunities for Thais to develop applications and startups. His advice was well-received, offering a pathway for further collaboration.
