Ayutthaya: At a lemon orchard located in Village No. 5, Bang Pa-in Subdistrict, Bang Pa-in District, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province, Mr. Wirot Nakkhon, a retired former director of the Bang Ban Non-Formal Education Center, has successfully cultivated over 100 lemon trees without the need for watering. The orchard produces such an abundance of fruit that the excess is freely distributed to the community.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Wirot, who is also the owner of a popular barbecue pork restaurant in the city, has utilized innovative techniques to grow the lemon trees. The fruits, known for their juiciness, are primarily used to make dipping sauces for his restaurant. The remainder of the harvest is generously given away to customers and neighbors.
After retiring from his position at the Non-Formal Education Center (now the Office of the Non-Formal Education Promotion), Mr. Wirot engaged in various ventures, including movie dubbing and running a barbecue restaurant named Rim Khlong, located opposite Wat Na Phra Meru Ratchikararam. He is also actively involved in environmental protection efforts within his community.
Mr. Wirot’s method involves creating an underground water bank by digging a 2-meter deep hole and layering unused tires to trap rainwater. This system allows the lemon tree roots to access water without additional irrigation. Plans are underway to install solar cells to pump water from the Lopburi River during the dry season, ensuring a sustainable water supply.
The successful cultivation of large-fruited lemon trees offers a valuable resource for his restaurant and provides a model for sustainable agriculture. Mr. Wirot welcomes anyone interested in learning about his techniques to visit the orchard.
