Bangkok: The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has announced a comprehensive overhaul of its civil service examination system, leading to the termination of its contract with Srinakharinwirot University. The BMA is also initiating a review of the entire system to enhance transparency. This move includes launching investigations into potential corruption, specifically targeting 17 projects related to the procurement of exercise equipment, with findings expected within a month.
According to Thai News Agency, Associate Professor Thawida Kamolwech, Deputy Governor of Bangkok, stated that the BMA is committed to improving transparency in its recruitment examinations to avoid issues that have previously plagued local government recruitment processes. The BMA Civil Service Commission (BMA CSC) and the Personnel Office (PO) have been tasked with scrutinizing every aspect of the examination process, from preparation to security, to ensure it aligns with rigorous transparency standards. This includes a thorough review of the Terms of Reference (TOR) and other relevant regulations.
The BMA had initially scheduled the next civil service exam for July 17-18, 2026, but announced its postponement to mid-September 2026 to allow for a thorough review and completion of the procurement process. Applicants were informed of this change on July 13th. Previously, Srinakharinwirot University was chosen to conduct the examination, but due to the ongoing review, the contract was terminated amicably after discussions with the university's president.
Progress in organizing the examination is anticipated to become clearer by August 15th, with the hiring process for an external agency expected to be finalized. The BMA aims to release the list of eligible candidates and examination venues by the end of August. Approximately 7,000 applicants may request a refund if they're unable or unwilling to take the exam on the new date.
Deputy Governor Thawida also provided updates on the investigation into exercise equipment procurement projects. A committee was appointed on July 15th to investigate 17 remaining projects, with a deadline set for August 15th. Investigations into seven previously submitted projects are also being accelerated, and findings from both sets of projects will be analyzed collectively to ensure no details are missed.
Additionally, the verification of median prices for all seven previously submitted projects is ongoing. A committee meeting is scheduled for July 23rd to discuss the progress of the median price determination process. The BMA is committed to expediting these processes to conclude the investigations promptly and restore public confidence.
