Detroit: Cameron Young, the world number 3, made an impressive mark during the second round of the Rocket Classic at Detroit Golf Club by firing a 61, matching the course record and taking a joint lead. His remarkable performance included seven birdies in the first eight holes, sparking hopes of achieving a historic PGA Tour score.
According to Thai News Agency, Young continued his strong play into the back nine, adding two more birdies to his scorecard. Although he finished with a bogey-free round of 9 under par 61, this score elevated his total to 10 under par, tying him for the lead with Patrick Cantlay and Patrick Fishburne, both of whom carded 66. Young expressed mixed emotions after narrowly missing a chance to break the all-time PGA Tour record of 58 strokes, as noted by Jim Furyk.
Trailing closely behind with a total score of 8 under par are Matt Wallace, who shot a 64, and Ricky Fowler, the 2023 champion, who scored 68. Fowler briefly held the solo lead at 11 under par, but three bogeys on the back nine set him back. Nevertheless, he managed to close his round with a birdie on the 18th hole.
The round also featured a memorable moment from Matt Kuchar, who thrilled the crowd with his seventh career hole-in-one. He successfully hit a 9-iron from 156 yards on the par-3 fifth hole, later gifting a signed golf ball to a young fan as a keepsake.
As the cut-off was set at 3 under par, several prominent players, including US Open champion Wyndham Clark and Chris Gotterup, were unable to advance. Clark finished 5 over par, while Gotterup ended his streak of making the cut in 14 consecutive tournaments by finishing 1 over par.
