Bangkok: The court is preparing to deliver its verdict in the high-profile case involving a Uighur suspect, accused of planting a bomb at the Erawan Shrine in Ratchaprasong. The explosion, which occurred on August 17, 2015, resulted in the deaths of 20 individuals, including 14 foreigners and six Thais, and injured over 100 others.
According to Thai News Agency, the lawyer representing the suspect, Mr. Adem Karadag, insists on his client's innocence. He argues that credible evidence demonstrates his client entered the country after the bombing and differs in stature from the individual captured on CCTV footage. The lawyer further claims that Mr. Adem never confessed to the crime but was coerced into admitting illegal entry. He expressed confidence in handling the national security case, likening the role of lawyers to that of doctors who serve all individuals without bias.
The case, which has involved over 400 prosecution witnesses and 45 defense witnesses, is supported by more than 10,000 pages of evidence. The Bangkok South Criminal Court is set to announce its verdict on June 11, 2026, at 9:00 AM. Mr. Chuchart Kanpai, Mr. Adem's lawyer, stated that he has been involved in the case from the start and remains hopeful for a just outcome. He emphasized that CCTV footage and other evidence clearly indicate that his client was not involved in the bombing.
The defense team argues that Mr. Adem was not present in the room where explosives were found and could not access it without cutting the padlock. They also noted that Mr. Adem was part of a group of Muslims who tend to gather in certain areas of Thailand, explaining his presence with other Uighur members. Despite the challenges of a national security case, Mr. Chuchart reiterated his commitment to ensuring justice, maintaining his belief in his client's innocence based on the extensive evidence collected over nearly 11 years.
