Bangkok:Mr. Pipat Ratchakitprakarn, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, is actively addressing flood solutions in southern Thailand, emphasizing the importance of preparation and immediate evacuation in case of heavy rainfall.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Pipat chaired a meeting with the Committee on Flood and Drought Prevention and Mitigation to discuss strategies for dealing with potential natural disasters in the southern region. He highlighted the significance of learning from the 2025 floods and instructed the immediate evacuation of areas if rain persists for two consecutive days.
Mr. Pipat emphasized the importance of readiness, referencing the past flooding in Hat Yai District, Songkhla Province, where evacuations were delayed. He is tasked with overseeing 14 southern provinces to prepare for earthquakes, floods, and storms. The meeting was divided into sessions with representatives from Region 8 and Region 9 to enhance coordination.
He urged the 14 provinces to monitor rainfall forecasts closely, with governors responsible for collecting daily data. This information will be analyzed by the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation to guide planning. Special attention is being given to vulnerable groups, including bedridden patients, in evacuation plans.
Mr. Pipat acknowledged the unpredictability of natural disasters but stressed the need for preparedness and coordination among agencies and local administrators. He also introduced the concept of "mentor homes," where sturdy houses provide support and supplies to nearby residences, ensuring aid even when government assistance is delayed.
