Devotees Offer Pork Barbecue to Monks at Ordination Ceremony in Samut Songkhram

Samut songkhram: Offering a pork barbecue set to the monks for their midday meal, a group of devotees added a lively touch to the ordination ceremony held in honor of His Majesty the King at Wat Phet Samut Worawihan.

According to Thai News Agency, a group of devout Buddhists, along with officials from the Samut Songkhram Provincial Office of Buddhism, prepared a traditional Thai barbecue meal for the monks. The meal was part of a mass ordination ceremony held at Wat Phet Samut Worawihan, also known as Wat Ban Laem, to honor His Majesty King Vajiralongkorn and Her Majesty Queen Suthida. This event was also a merit-making act for Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother, and coincided with Her Majesty Queen Suthida's 48th birthday on June 3, 2026.

The offering included savory dishes, desserts, and a barbecue grill, creating a stir among those present. Further information indicated that internet research validated the act, stating "it is permissible" as long as it is not among the ten forbidden meats listed in Buddhist scriptures. Consumption must be conducted with "acharaya," or good conduct, proper manners, and appropriate timing, as prescribed by Buddhist teachings. This information was discussed with senior monks to ensure the pork barbecue lunch was in accordance with Buddhist principles, thus generating merit for all participants.
