Bangkok: The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has announced a reduction in electricity rates by 6 satang per unit starting with the September billing cycle. This decision follows the revelation of hidden costs associated with "public electricity" that have been included in bills for over 30 years, amounting to over 18 billion baht annually.
According to Thai News Agency, the reduction in electricity rates comes as part of a significant "electricity tariff restructuring" announced by Energy Minister Ekanat Promphan. The ERC's resolution lowers the electricity rate to 3.89 baht per unit, effective from September through December. Residential customers using less than 200 units per month will benefit from a capped rate of 3 baht per unit.
Minister Ekanat highlighted that the reduction aims to alleviate the financial burden on citizens, prompted by the discovery of the long-standing hidden costs. The National Energy Policy Council (NEPC) met to address this issue, deciding to separate and reallocate the public electricity costs. Of the 18 billion baht uncovered, 15 billion will subsidize those using under 200 units, while the remaining funds will provide additional discounts for users exceeding this threshold. This initiative also includes rental homes, dormitories, apartments, and homes lacking registered addresses.
