Government’s Household Debt Initiative Frees 947 Guarantors from Student Loans

Bangkok: The government is advancing its initiative to tackle household debt, successfully reducing the financial burden by over 171 million baht and releasing 947 guarantors from the obligation of student loans.

According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Lalida Periswiwatana, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, announced that under the leadership of Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, the government is prioritizing the resolution of household debt issues. This effort is crucial for economic recovery and improving citizens' quality of life. The initiative, known as the "Household Debt Resolution and Justice for the People Fair," is a collaborative effort involving the Ministry of Justice, government agencies, financial institutions, and partner networks nationwide. It aims to offer citizens access to debt mediation, restructuring, and fair legal assistance.

Ms. Lalida shared that the 16th Household Debt Resolution and Public Justice Fair, held in Nakhon Pathom on June 26, 2026, showcased successful integrated cooperation in resolving debt issues. The event was attended by 1,579 individuals, with 1,232 debtors participating in the mediation process. Remarkably, all participants were successfully mediated, representing a 100% success rate.

The initiative addressed a total debt of over 179.93 million baht, reducing the financial burden by more than 171.44 million baht. Additionally, it lifted the burden off 947 guarantors of the Student Loan Fund (SLF), thus significantly reducing their financial liabilities and creating economic opportunities for individuals and families.

Ms. Lalida further explained that the event provided services for debt mediation both before and after litigation, alongside legal advice, assistance with rights and benefits, and access to the justice system. This comprehensive approach aims to help citizens resolve debt issues, reduce the risk of entering the enforcement process, and enhance opportunities for economic recovery.

The government remains committed to addressing household debt as it believes that reducing these burdens is vital for economic opportunities and recovery. The Household Debt Resolution and Public Justice Fair is a key mechanism in ensuring access to debt mediation, restructuring, and legal assistance. The government plans to expand this initiative to alleviate living costs, improve liquidity, and establish economic stability throughout the country.
