Bangkok: The Director-General of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) confirmed that the earthquake in Indonesia did not affect high-rise buildings in Thailand, stating that the warning system works through collaborative analysis among multiple parties.
According to Thai News Agency, the Director-General, Mr. Teerapat Khachamat, addressed concerns regarding the earthquake's impact on southern Thailand. He emphasized that the recent seismic activity, part of the Ring of Fire, was closely monitored and posed no threat to Thailand's infrastructure. The earthquake, which occurred on August 15th, caused tremors due to its proximity of less than 500 kilometers from Thailand, but investigations revealed no damage to buildings. Although Indonesia initially issued a tsunami warning, it was rescinded shortly thereafter, and Thailand remained vigilant for any potential threats.
Mr. Teerapat detailed the mechanisms in place for tsunami detection, highlighting the strategic placement of buoys approximately 540 kilometers from Thailand's coast and another in the Indian Ocean, 900 kilometers away. These buoys are crucial for monitoring underwater seismic activities and send signals to satellites for immediate evacuation warnings if an earthquake of 7.0 on the Richter scale is detected. He noted that while some buoys are being repaired, the primary warning system relies on earthquake readings, supported by warning towers in the Andaman Sea.
The DDPM is also actively observing flood conditions, coordinating with local authorities, and leveraging Cell Broadcast technology for rapid alerts. Although no major storms have been reported, high-risk areas along rivers are being monitored closely. The department's preparedness is backed by satellite imagery and collaborative analysis with meteorological agencies to issue timely warnings.
Mr. Teerapat reassured the public of the effectiveness of the Cell Broadcast system, explaining that weather data is analyzed daily and warnings are disseminated swiftly through local broadcasting towers. He urged citizens to heed the warnings and remain calm, emphasizing the importance of this communication system in conveying the gravity of potential natural events.
