Investigation Launched into Allegations of Abuse at Kanchanaburi Senior Care Center

Kanchanaburi:The Minister of Public Health has initiated an investigation into a senior care center in Kanchanaburi following allegations of abuse, including confinement and drugging of patients.

According to Thai News Agency, the Department of Health Service Support (DHSS) and the Department of Mental Health have been tasked with examining the facility in Tha Muang Subdistrict, after reports surfaced detailing improper treatment of the elderly. The Minister, Mr. Pattana Phromphat, emphasized the urgency of the investigation and suggested that the center be closed if the allegations are confirmed.

Mr. Phromphat highlighted the unacceptable conditions at the center, noting that the use of confinement cages is a clear violation of regulations. He underlined the need for a thorough investigation into the center's licensing process to identify any deficiencies that allowed such practices to occur.

The investigation will also review medical records to assess the health of residents, especially concerning reports of drug use to sedate patients. Mr. Phromphat stressed the illegality of such actions and has coordinated with police and relevant agencies for further investigation.

The Minister suggested that a closure order is likely if wrongdoing is confirmed, but any decision will consider fairness and the impact on all parties involved. The findings of the investigation, particularly regarding the licensing process, are to be made public to address concerns about public sentiment.

Currently, the exact number of elderly residents affected remains unclear, and further information is expected to be provided by the Director-General of DHSS. A resolution is anticipated by the end of today.
