Bangkok: An investigation has been ordered into the controversy surrounding highway patrol officers arresting a paramilitary soldier. The Commander of the Central Investigation Bureau has ordered an investigation into the facts surrounding the controversial arrest of a paramilitary soldier at a checkpoint in Phatthalung by highway patrol officers for possessing firearms and ammunition.
According to Thai News Agency, Pol. Lt. Gen. Nattasak Chaowanasai, Commander of the Central Investigation Bureau, stated that highway police arrested a paramilitary soldier at a crime prevention and suppression checkpoint on Highway 4 in Khao Chaison District, Phatthalung Province, and seized a registered 9mm handgun and 41 rounds of ammunition. The incident gained widespread attention after the Highway Police Facebook page posted about the arrest, sparking backlash from social media users who claimed that the ranger had just returned from a mission in Narathiwat province.
Pol. Lt. Gen. Nattasak has ordered an investigation into the facts and a report of the findings, as inconsistencies exist regarding whether the arresting officers were aware that the individuals were paramilitary rangers. Some officers claimed they knew they were rangers, while others stated they did not. Emphasizing the need for fairness, he noted that further actions would be based on these findings. Additionally, reports indicate that the suspects did not cooperate as expected during the arrest. If it is determined that officers acted with prior knowledge of the suspects' identities, the exercise of discretion may need to be reconsidered. The Commander urged everyone to await clarification before reaching any conclusions.
