Bangkok: "Jaset" has directed the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation to expedite responses to disasters, ensuring they act faster than the disasters themselves, and has mandated 24-hour preparedness for provinces deemed at high risk.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Jetseth Thaiseth, Deputy Minister of Interior, communicated these instructions following a warning from the Meteorological Department regarding expected heavy to very heavy rainfall, which poses a risk of flash floods, landslides, and mudslides between July 30 and August 2, 2026. He emphasized the importance of coordinating with provincial governors, local administrative bodies, and community leaders in high-risk areas to maintain constant readiness to protect lives and property.
Mr. Thaiseth noted that while some affected areas are seeing conditions improve, the threat of significant rainfall remains. He urged high-risk provinces to stay vigilant, particularly in protecting vulnerable populations such as the elderly and bedridden patients.
The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation reported that as of 6:00 PM yesterday, flash floods had impacted three provinces in the northern region:
Chiang Rai Province experienced flash floods in Mae Chan and Chiang Rai City, affecting seven sub-districts and villages. Water levels have since declined, and damage assessments are ongoing.
In Chiang Mai Province, Mae Ai District faced incidents affecting four sub-districts and five villages, with four households impacted. Water levels have returned to normal.
Phayao Province saw flash floods in Mueang Phayao District, affecting six sub-districts and six villages, impacting 86 households. Officials have assisted in moving belongings to safer areas, and water drainage efforts are underway. There have been no injuries or fatalities reported in these provinces.
Mr. Teerapat Khachamat, Director-General of the DDPM, highlighted that, aside from the northern region, flash floods have also been reported in Uttaradit, Phetchabun, and Chanthaburi provinces due to ongoing rainfall.
To enhance disaster response, the DDPM has implemented an upgraded proactive alert system that sends short message alerts via cell broadcast directly to mobile phones in at-risk areas, enabling timely preparation and response.
