Bangkok: The Ministry of Interior has ordered the implementation of nine proactive measures to prepare for the 2026 rainy season. The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Arsit Sampanrat, emphasized the need for governors and local authorities nationwide to expedite the establishment of water management centers and early warning systems. The initiative aims to mitigate flooding and minimize its impact on the public through thorough inspection of flood barriers and ensuring machinery readiness.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Sampanrat revealed that the preparations align with a plan approved by the National Water Resources Office in a Cabinet meeting on June 10, 2026. He highlighted the importance of integrating cooperation among relevant agencies to prevent and mitigate potential impacts on the public effectively.
Mr. Sampanrat detailed that the Ministry of Interior has instructed provincial governors and district officers to collaborate with local administrative organizations to prepare comprehensively for flood situations. This involves inspecting flood barriers, removing drainage obstructions, and establishing forward water management centers in high-risk areas to provide timely public assistance. Additionally, community-level warning networks will be created through village headmen and sub-district chiefs to communicate risks promptly.
The nine measures outlined include forecasting and identifying areas at risk, improving water management criteria, preparing machinery for immediate deployment, inspecting flood barriers, enhancing water drainage efficiency, establishing pre-disaster water management centers, developing water sources, raising risk awareness, and continuously monitoring and evaluating the measures' effectiveness. Mr. Sampanrat emphasized that these measures aim to ensure efficient and prompt implementation of water management strategies for the 2026 rainy season.
