Naypyidaw: Myanmar's state media reported that Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, the leader of Myanmar's military junta and current president, is scheduled to make an official visit to Laos in the coming days. This marks his first visit to an ASEAN member country since the transition from head of the military to civilian president four months ago. He has previously visited neighboring countries India and China.
According to Thai News Agency, this trip was at the invitation of Lao President Thongloun Sisoulith, amidst the situation where ASEAN has not yet recognized the results of Myanmar's elections late last year, in which opposition groups were suppressed, resulting in a landslide victory for the military-backed party.
However, ASEAN leaders have begun to reconnect with Myanmar, with the foreign ministers of Thailand and Malaysia having already visited Naypyidaw. This aligns with Senior General Min Aung Hlaing's earlier declaration that restoring relations with ASEAN is a key priority for the government.
