Nikornadej Advocates for Ceasefire and Unrestricted Shipping in Strait of Hormuz

Paris: Mr. Nikorndej Plangkul, Ambassador of Thailand to Paris, took part in a virtual conference focusing on the issue of freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. The event, co-chaired by President Emmanuel Macron of France and Prime Minister Sir Kir Starmer of the United Kingdom, saw participation from over 50 countries spanning the Middle East, South Asia, the Indo-Pacific region, and European Union member states, along with representatives from the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and NATO.According to Thai News Agency, the conference underscored a collective international commitment to supporting a ceasefire and resolving conflicts through diplomatic channels, thereby ensuring unrestricted navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. The discussions emphasized adherence to international law, particularly the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) 1982. Participants voiced their resolve to tackle economic challenges affecting food security, energy security, fertilizers, free trade, and the maritime industry.The meeting also called on international bodies like the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank to implement support measures for low-income countries. Additionally, the safety of more than 20,000 crew members and over 2,000 stranded merchant vessels was highlighted as a priority, with discussions on the establishment of an international fleet for defensive missions to protect merchant ships and clear underwater mines in the Strait.
