Bangkok: The Pollution Control Department (PCD) tested water from a data center in the Rama 9 area and found volatile organic compounds (VOCs) present in the samples. This inspection was initiated after residents raised concerns about an oily smell coming from the drainage system.
According to Thai News Agency, officials from the Pollution Control Department conducted a thorough examination of the data center following the residents' complaints. During the inspection, water samples were collected from the drainage pits before they are released outside, and these samples are currently undergoing laboratory analysis. Detailed results of these tests are expected to be available in approximately two to three weeks.
The initial inspection of the external drainage system revealed approximately 3 parts per million (ppm) of VOCs, substances commonly associated with oil, and hydrogen sulfide, which is detectable by its distinct rotten egg smell. Although the presence of these compounds was confirmed, officials have not yet determined whether the levels found pose a health risk or are hazardous. Further investigation is required to ascertain whether the pollution originates directly from the data center or if other sources are contributing to the contamination. The study will also include an analysis of water flow direction to better understand the source of the pollution.
