Bangkok: In a strategic move to bolster Thailand's position as a manufacturing base for electric vehicles (EVs) and artificial intelligence (AI), the Thai Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, Anutin Charnvirakul, is currently engaging in a high-profile roadshow within Thailand. This initiative focuses on one-on-one discussions with four prominent Chinese companies: Xiaomi Corporation, ChangAn Automobile, Innolight Technology, and Eoptolink Technology, aiming to attract substantial investments in future industries, EV technology, and digital platforms.
According to Thai News Agency, the Prime Minister's meetings with these Chinese companies have revealed a significant interest in expanding their investments in Thailand. The discussions highlighted Thailand's perceived advantages such as geopolitical stability, well-established infrastructure, clean energy, and a supportive investment ecosystem offered through the Thailand FastPass program and BOI incentives. Many companies already operating in Thailand are looking to expand, while others are considering Thailand as a new investment destination as they seek opportunities outside of China.
The Prime Minister emphasized that the meetings are not merely a platform for addressing investor concerns but are also aimed at building confidence in Thailand's potential as a conducive production base. He assured investors that Thailand would support them in achieving their investment goals, focusing on continued cooperation, particularly in research and development (RandD).
During discussions, the importance of investment in RandD, technology transfer, and human resource development was highlighted by all participating companies. This aligns with an IMF report recognizing Thailand as one of the top four AI manufacturing bases globally and an integral part of global supply chains.
Breaking down the discussions with each company:
Xiaomi Corporation, represented by Vice President and CFO Mr. LAM Alain, is exploring the expansion of its EV business internationally, with plans to establish an RandD center in the ASEAN region. The company considers Thailand a strategic location for expanding its activities, including exports to Europe.
ChangAn Automobile, led by Chairman Mr. Zhu Huarong, has chosen Thailand's Rayong province as its first international production base for right-hand drive electric vehicles targeting the ASEAN and global markets. The company plans to establish an International Business Office and an RandD center in Thailand.
Innolight Technology, under CEO Mr. Liu Sheng, sees Thailand as its largest overseas production base and a crucial RandD hub. The company is committed to green energy in its production processes and plans to expand RandD collaboration while increasing the use of locally produced materials and components.
Eoptolink Technology, represented by CEO Mr. Gao Guangrong, is planning to expand its production capacity in Thailand, which currently serves as its only production base outside China. The company employs over 8,000 people in Chonburi and Rayong provinces, and aims to strengthen its position in the global supply chain.
These developments highlight Thailand's readiness and strategic positioning to attract investment in emerging industries, particularly in EVs and AI, reinforcing its role as a key player in the global market.
