Bangkok: The Royal Thai Navy launched the Royal Barge Suphannahong into the water, marking the beginning of preparations for the Royal Barge Procession. The event, which took place at the National Museum of Royal Barges, sets the stage for the Kathina Robe Offering Ceremony in 2026, honoring the 4th cycle birthday anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit on June 3rd, 2026. During the ceremony, the barge's captain and crew engaged in a ritual involving incense and candles to honor the guardian spirits of the vessel. The barge was then transferred from Khlong Bangkok Noi into the Chao Phraya River, passing notable landmarks before docking at the Thonburi Naval Dockyard.
According to Thai News Agency, the procession will feature four royal barges: Suphannahong, Narai Song Suban (Ratchakal 9), Anantanagaraj, and Anekchat Phuchong. These barges are scheduled to be launched and moored at Thonburi Naval Dockyard between August 5-8, 2026, with one barge being launched each day.
The Suphannahong has a storied history, originating from the Ayutthaya period and noted in songs by Prince Thammathibet Chaiyachet Suriyawong. It was rebuilt during King Chulalongkorn's reign, completed under King Vajiravudh, and designed by Rear Admiral Phraya Rajsongkram. The barge features a swan-shaped bow, intricate adornments, and a royal throne. It measures 44.90 meters in length and requires a crew of 71 to operate.
In recognition of its historical significance, the World Ship Trust of the United Kingdom awarded the Royal Barge Suphannahong the World Ship Trust Heritage Award in 1992. The award was presented to His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who then honored the Director-General of the Fine Arts Department for the barge's preservation.
