Bangkok: Surasak Panjaroenvorakul, the Minister of Tourism and Sports, has announced a substantial financial commitment to support Thai athletes participating in the upcoming 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan. He confirmed that a budget of 131 million baht has been approved, with plans to seek an additional 6 million baht to ensure that no eligible athletes are disqualified due to financial constraints.
According to Thai News Agency, the announcement followed a meeting involving the National Olympic Committee of Thailand, the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT), and the National Sports Development Fund. The government has emphasized its commitment to the development of sports and has pledged to support all athletes who meet the selection criteria. Despite budgetary challenges following the recent SEA Games, there will be no reduction in the number of participating sports associations.
Surasak stated that the National Sports Development Fund has earmarked an initial budget of 131 million baht for the Asian Games, with an additional 6 million baht being sought to support three more associations. This funding will cover over 690 athletes from 43 sports, including those from the newly selected associations.
In preparation for the Youth Olympic Games scheduled for October 2026, Surasak has tasked the SAT and the National Sports Development Fund with developing a budget framework to support the transition between fiscal years 2026 and 2027. This initiative aims to ensure uninterrupted training and participation for Thai athletes. Sports associations have been urged to expedite their training and expenditure plans to facilitate timely budget allocation.
The Ministry of Tourism and Sports is also planning a meeting with relevant sports associations on July 27, 2026, to establish long-term sports budget management guidelines. The focus will be on using program plans and key performance indicators (KPIs) to promote transparency and fairness in fund allocation and athlete development.
Additionally, Surasak confirmed that prize money for medal-winning athletes will be disbursed promptly, adhering to the National Sports Development Fund's regulations. Payments will be made directly into athletes' accounts within seven days after the competition concludes, aiming to enhance athletes' morale and provide tangible support.
