Suriya Engages with Malaysia to Resolve Thai Shrimp Export Ban

Kuala lumpur: Suriya discusses with Malaysia to resolve the ban on Thai shrimp; expects exports to return to normal within 30 days.

According to Thai News Agency, the Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives has announced a collaborative effort between Thailand and Malaysia to inspect and control pesticide residues, aiming to meet the sanitary standards required for five species of Thai shrimp. The Minister expressed confidence that these efforts will lead to the resumption of shrimp exports within 30 days. Additionally, plans are in place to boost exports of Thai shrimp and pork products to Malaysia.

Mr. Suriya Jungrungreangkit, Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives, after a meeting with Dato' Seri Mohamad Sabu, Malaysia's Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, disclosed that discussions focused on Malaysia's temporary restrictions on five shrimp species from Thailand. Both countries agreed to expedite pesticide residue testing and sanitary inspections to facilitate normal trade operations.

Mr. Suriya is optimistic that with accelerated discussions, the inspection process will be completed in less than 30 days. The meeting also covered the potential for Thailand to export beef and pork products to Malaysia, with Malaysia pledging to hasten the necessary processes to allow these exports to commence promptly.

Malaysia has defended its decision to impose controls on Thai shrimp by citing the implementation of new measures designed to uphold agricultural product standards for imports and exports. These conversations are expected to pave the way for the normalization of shrimp exports from Thailand to Malaysia.
