Thai Cabinet Approves Comprehensive Child Development Plan to Foster Global Citizens

Bangkok: The government has announced a significant new initiative aimed at fostering a new generation of "global citizens." The Cabinet has given the green light to a child development plan that places a strong emphasis on critical thinking, the responsible use of technology, and lifelong learning.

According to Thai News Agency, the Cabinet has officially approved the draft of the Third National Child and Youth Development Action Plan (2023-2027). This strategic blueprint aims to cultivate "Thai citizens in a global context" who are well-prepared to navigate the dynamic changes of the modern world. The plan underscores the importance of critical thinking, responsible technology use, and digital media literacy. It also highlights the necessity of lifelong learning, youth participation, and collaborative efforts across all sectors to foster an environment that supports holistic growth.

Lieutenant Colonel Patthadarasmi Thongsalooykorn, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, shared that the Cabinet has endorsed the draft proposed by the National Committee for the Promotion of Child and Youth Development. The Cabinet has also tasked relevant agencies with implementing their missions in alignment with the plan to ensure a unified approach to child and youth development in the country.

The deputy spokesperson emphasized that the plan envisions children and youth enjoying a high quality of life and reaching their full potential. The aim is to mold them into "Thai citizens in a global context" who are knowledgeable, skilled, morally grounded, and socially responsible, equipped to adapt to the challenges of the 21st century.

A key component of the plan is the focus on developing future-ready skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication. It also stresses the responsible and safe use of technology and digital media, alongside lifelong learning and promoting morals, ethics, and respect for diversity, enabling children and youth to engage constructively with others and pursue continuous self-development.

The initiative seeks to establish an environment that supports the comprehensive development of children and youth by encouraging the active involvement of families, educational institutions, communities, the private sector, and civil society. It also aims to provide platforms for young people to voice their opinions and contribute to societal development in age-appropriate ways. Additionally, the plan outlines the need to enhance database systems, monitoring and evaluation processes, and the integration of efforts across relevant agencies to ensure the effective execution of policies.

"The government prioritizes investing in children and youth because today's children are the future strength of the country. This action plan is therefore an important framework to help all sectors work together to build quality Thai children and youth who are resilient, ready for lifelong learning, and capable of becoming global citizens who can confidently cope with global changes," stated Captain Patthadarasmi.
