Thailand and Timor-Leste Commit to Strengthen Bilateral Cooperation

Bangkok:Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul of Thailand held discussions with Timor-Leste Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão to enhance cooperation in five key areas, focusing on trade, security, and development.

According to Thai News Agency, the meeting resulted in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding establishing a bilateral dialogue mechanism between the two countries, alongside a joint press conference summarizing the outcomes. Thailand expressed its support for Timor-Leste's participation in ASEAN, following its full membership last year.

Both countries agreed to promote high-level visits and celebrate the 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2027. The first meeting under the new dialogue mechanism will soon take place in Timor-Leste.

In defense and security, Thailand will send its Supreme Commander to Timor-Leste to strengthen military ties. Both nations will collaborate on preventing and combating online and transnational crime.

Economic cooperation will see Thailand assisting Timor-Leste with food security and expediting a rice trade agreement. They also plan to facilitate Thai investments in sectors such as agriculture, energy, and tourism. An air services agreement is being finalized to establish direct flights between Bangkok and Dili.

Development cooperation includes Thailand's provision of over 800 scholarships to Timor-Leste since 2001. Both sides aim to conclude a three-year development plan and emphasized child and youth development projects under the royal initiative of Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.

Regionally, Thailand supports Timor-Leste's integration into ASEAN and its future chairmanship. Both countries addressed the situation in Myanmar, advocating for its active participation in ASEAN.

These discussions signify a deepening relationship aimed at leveraging economic cooperation, enhancing security, and fostering human resource development to benefit both nations.
