Thaksin and Prabowo’s Meeting Deemed Political Spectacle by Academics

Bangkok: Academics have characterized the recent meeting between Thaksin Shinawatra and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto as a political spectacle rather than an unusual event. According to Thai News Agency, this meeting is perceived as a display of long-standing personal ties rather than a politically significant encounter.

Associate Professor Wanwichit Boonproong, a political science scholar from Rangsit University, highlighted that the connection between former Prime Minister Thaksin and President Prabowo dates back to Thaksin's tenure. He explained that on September 7, 2024, President Prabowo visited Thaksin's residence to congratulate Paetongtarn Shinawatra on her appointment as Prime Minister, indicating their established relationship. During Thaksin's time in office, he had collaborated closely with Indonesia, with Prabowo being part of that cooperative dynamic.

Associate Professor Wanwichit clarified that this meeting should be seen as a personal visit, not a governmental or diplomatic mission endorsed by the Thai government. He emphasized that it should not be linked to political or diplomatic actions by the Thai administration.

President Prabowo is recognized as maintaining cordial ties with both current and former leaders worldwide. Such meetings with past Thai leaders are considered routine aspects of international personal relations. The current government holds the authority for national administration and official decisions, while interactions with former leaders remain a distinct aspect. Consequently, these meetings should not be misconstrued or inflated into political drama.
