Bangkok: Anutin Charnvirakul has expressed that there is no reason to avoid meeting with the three former prime ministers from the Pheu Thai party, as they were once part of the same government. He highlighted the importance of setting aside personal differences if they share common goals for the country. Anutin also mentioned his attentiveness to public calls for continuing the "Thai Helps Thai Plus 60/40" initiative, though he plans to review the methodology and budget before proceeding.
According to Thai News Agency, Anutin, who serves as both Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, shared his thoughts during an interview about the atmosphere at his recent meeting with former Pheu Thai Party prime ministers. This encounter took place at the funeral of Mr. Krieng Kalptinant in Ubon Ratchathani province, where Anutin described the meeting as one of mutual respect rather than a particularly cordial one. They engaged in conversation as a formality, given the context of the gathering.
When questioned about the possibility of meeting the former prime ministers outside of such occasions, Anutin disclosed that he has had regular interactions with Prime Ministers Thaksin, Somchai, and Paetongtarn since their initial acquaintance. He stressed that there is no reason to shy away from discussions, especially as they now share a government platform. This, he believes, provides ample opportunity for dialogue.
Addressing the wider political landscape, Anutin reflected on the notion that in politics, there are no eternal friends or foes. He asserted that if the ultimate aim is the nation's benefit and prosperity, personal issues should be secondary. The primary focus should be on strengthening the country and improving the lives of its citizens.
In terms of political challenges, Anutin expressed concerns about achieving current governmental goals. He noted the positive reception of policies like the "Thai Help Thai Plus" and "60/40" initiatives, which have contributed to improved economic figures and bolstered confidence in Thailand's credibility. Despite these successes, Anutin remains focused on further progress, questioning how to push export growth beyond the current 20% and GDP growth beyond 2%.
Responding to public interest in the continuation of the "Thai Helps Thai Plus" program, Anutin acknowledged awareness of these sentiments. However, he emphasized the need to consider practical aspects such as methods and budget. He clarified that the program is not a welfare or populist initiative, but rather a strategy to enhance public involvement in national development and economic enhancement.
