Bangkok: Anutin Charnvirakul has vowed to prosecute Chalong Riangrang to the fullest extent of the law following the fatal shooting of Pol. Col. Thongchai Yenprasert. Anutin, the Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, criticized the police for their conduct during a press conference, asserting that the gravity of the incident was not reflected in their handling.
According to Thai News Agency, Chalong Riangrang, a former Nonthaburi MP, is accused of shooting Thongchai Yenprasert, the President of the Nonthaburi Provincial Administrative Organization. Anutin confirmed that legal actions would proceed without exception and noted the investigation has already opposed bail. He emphasized the illegality of carrying firearms, regardless of registration, and insisted on multiple charges being pressed.
When questioned about Chalong's political background, Anutin dismissed it, stating, "I don't care who he is, because right now he's a murderer." He criticized the police for allowing Chalong to hold a press conference shortly after the incident, describing it as unacceptable and shocking to public morale.
Anutin highlighted that gun permits in Thailand have expired and reiterated the need for new legal measures regarding firearm possession. He announced the welfare firearms program is currently on hold and will not be approved under his watch.
Addressing Chalong's political affiliations, Anutin stated he is not concerned about Chalong's party membership. Ms. Traisuli Traisaranakul, Secretary to the Prime Minister and Registrar of the Bhumjaithai Party, confirmed Chalong's resignation from the party in May 2024. Chalong, who previously served as an MP for the Pheu Thai Party, has reportedly joined the Palang Pracharath Party.
