Department of Business Development Transforms Thai Retail Landscape by Upgrading Over 8,000 Stores

Bangkok: The Department of Business Development has successfully elevated the skills of over 260,000 entrepreneurs, marking a significant milestone in the transformation of Thailand's retail sector. The department's 2026 'wholesale and retail store' development program has enhanced the capabilities of 26,554 businesses, resulting in the upgrade of 8,027 stores into smart convenience stores and the creation of 390 model stores nationwide.According to Thai News Agency, the Department of Business Development showcased the results of its 2026 initiatives aimed at strengthening local entrepreneurs through two key programs: 'Smart Grocery Store Plus' and 'Development of Model Local Wholesale and Retail Stores'. These initiatives have not only enhanced the knowledge of thousands of entrepreneurs but also expanded market opportunities by connecting over 100 stores, encompassing more than 800 branches, through the "Thai Help Thai x Local Low Cost" campaign. This campaign has been instrumental in adapting to technolo gical changes and evolving consumer behaviors.Mr. Sathaporn Ruamnapaya, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Business Development, stated at a recent press conference that local wholesale and retail businesses are vital to the Thai economy. They facilitate product distribution, generate income, and create employment in local areas. The department's projects in 2026 focused on providing opportunities and developing the potential of these businesses by enhancing their capabilities, enabling them to adapt to changes, and increasing their sustainable competitiveness through technology.Deputy Director-General Sathaporn highlighted that the 'Smart Grocery Store Plus' activity has been pivotal in developing grocery store and small retail business owners. By imparting essential knowledge for modern business management and technology application, the initiative has significantly improved management efficiency and created new market opportunities. From 2017 to 2026, a total of 26,554 entrepreneurs have been developed, with 2,622 participating in 2026 alone.The "Thai Helps Thai x Local Low Cost" campaign emerged as a key highlight this year, creating substantial market opportunities for local businesses. It has expanded their reach to consumers and involved them in national trade promotion activities, with an economic impact projected at 70 million baht.The department's model local wholesale and retail store development program is committed to transitioning businesses to efficient and standardized management systems. In 2026, 31 stores were selected for an intensive development process, resulting in the creation of 390 model stores nationwide. These model stores serve as exemplary centers, transferring knowledge to smaller retailers and fostering a network of stores that enhances the local retail landscape.Today's event also featured collaborations with organizations like Theerplan Co., Ltd., the Digital Economy Promotion Agency, and the 'Ruammitr' online trading platform, offering innovative solutions to e nhance sales efficiency and expand sales channels.Additionally, a panel discussion on 'Upgrading Retail Businesses with AI and Technology' provided insights and solutions for applying technology in retail businesses, inspiring entrepreneurs to embrace technological advancements."The performance results for 2026 demonstrate our dedication to developing people, stores, and the business ecosystem.
