Bangkok: Deputy Interior Minister Pol. Gen. Peerapong Suwannachawi has mandated a 7-day deadline to advance the investigation into the case involving Chinese nominees operating in the Huai Khwang area. He also suggested imminent developments in dismantling a network responsible for issuing counterfeit Thai identity cards to foreigners.
According to Thai News Agency, Pol. Gen. Peerapong provided an update on the situation during an inspection of nominee hotel operators in Huai Khwang on August 9th. The investigation revealed irregularities, including unregistered hotel operations and improperly documented foreign workers. The inspection team, comprising members from various government departments, discovered evidence pointing to payment arrangements managed by an individual known as "Mr. Po," who allegedly oversees these operations. This evidence was submitted to the police, aiming to address the legal and economic implications for local business owners.
The ongoing investigation highlights systemic issues within Huai Khwang, with potential widespread violations affecting Thai business owners' rights and legal tax obligations. Complaints from the public and MPs have spurred this probe, seeking to protect Thai citizens' benefits, including land ownership, from foreign encroachment. Pol. Gen. Peerapong, relatively new to his role, is keen on addressing these issues, initiating internal investigations within related police agencies.
The investigation also touches upon broader concerns involving foreign investments and potential legal loopholes exploited with assistance from various professionals. While the involvement of government officials remains uncertain, the Deputy Minister emphasized that anyone found complicit would face prosecution. The investigation aims to trace financial transactions and potentially seize assets linked to illegal activities, enhancing scrutiny on foreign nationals involved in unlawful business practices.
Collaboration with the Huai Khwang Police Station is essential in updating and addressing the findings within the stipulated timeframe. Deputy Minister of Interior Mr. Worasit Liengprasit is coordinating with Bangkok's Governor to ensure accountability. Simultaneously, Pol. Gen. Peerapong mentioned future inspections of entertainment venues, including those in the RCA area, and anticipated actions against a network producing fake identity cards, details of which will unfold in the coming weeks.
