Director-General Addresses Compensation Controversy, Clarifies Khlong Chan Mention

Sanaa:The Director-General of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) addressed the controversy surrounding compensation payments, emphasizing that the "Khlong Chan" area was not specifically mentioned. He clarified that all areas meeting criteria for flooding or water surfacing can register and receive funds immediately.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Nirat Pongsitthaworn explained the situation regarding the Khlong Chan housing estate, which was not eligible for flood relief payments of 5,000 or 9,000 baht as per the Cabinet resolution. He stated that the Khlong Chan flats were not mentioned in his comments, and he only addressed a general question about areas not meeting the criteria. The government aims to support those affected by floods, with a central budget of approximately 4.7 billion baht approved for fiscal year 2026, alongside existing Ministry of Finance regulations.

Eligibility for relief payments requires that homes be flooded or surrounded by water, with most affected areas in over 60 provinces receiving 9,000 baht. The Cabinet resolution provides additional support and establishes criteria to ensure rapid assistance. Areas overlooked, such as Samut Songkhram, which experienced flooding after the resolution, are being reviewed for inclusion.

Mr. Nirat also highlighted efforts to expedite the registration and payment process, mentioning that the Prime Minister has reduced the time taken for the DDPM to send data to the Government Savings Bank from two days to one. This initiative aims to speed up assistance nationwide, including for flood-prone areas. Provincial governors or district officers, along with the Bangkok governor, are responsible for conducting surveys to verify eligibility. Once verified, registration can begin immediately, and funds will be disbursed within days, even before water recedes, underscoring the commitment to accelerating the process.
