Bangkok: The Ministry of Agriculture is taking decisive steps by implementing six key measures to combat the spread of cassava mosaic disease, with a target of reducing the affected areas by 30% this year. According to Thai News Agency, the Department of Agricultural Extension is spearheading these efforts by focusing on surveillance, eradication of diseased plants, insect vector control, promotion of clean and resistant cassava varieties, and enhancing production efficiency to address the current shortfall in Thailand's cassava supply.
Ms. Anchalee Suvajittanont, Director-General of the Department of Agricultural Extension, emphasized the department's commitment to controlling the disease, especially in Kanchanaburi province, a significant cassava-producing region. The department has outlined six strategic approaches aimed at curbing the outbreak by 30% by the year 2026.
The strategies include regular field monitoring every 2-4 weeks, identifying clean and disease-resistant seed sources, and the immediate removal of infected plants. Additionally, efforts will be made to control tobacco whiteflies, which are known vectors of the disease. The department also plans to expand the cultivation of resistant varieties such as Itthi 1, Itthi 2, Itthi 3, Kasetsart 50, Huay Bong 60, and Rayong 72, while phasing out susceptible types.
A crucial part of the strategy involves controlling the movement of planting materials by verifying their source before planting and transport, thus preventing the disease from spreading to new areas. Establishing community seed banks and demonstration plots is also planned to ensure farmers have access to clean planting materials.
Efforts are being made to integrate various sectors and utilize networks to spread knowledge and guidelines on disease prevention and control to farmers. From initial pilot projects, there is an increased adoption of disease-resistant varieties among farmers. However, the current production levels of cassava in Thailand remain inadequate to fulfill market demand, making it imperative to enhance production efficiency in terms of quantity, quality, and farmers' income.
The Department of Agricultural Extension has designated the "Phu Pradu Phatthana Cassava Large-Scale Farming Group" in Mueang District, Kanchanaburi Province, as a model for applying advanced knowledge, technology, and innovation. This involves choosing cassava varieties suitable for the local climate and using machinery to boost production efficiency.
Demonstration plots in the area are showcasing mechanized and technological cassava production practices, including subsoiling, furrow planting, mechanized planting, pesticide drone spraying, modified fertilization, and starch yield improvement. These initiatives allow farmers to adopt technologies that best suit their conditions and align their production processes to standardized levels.
The approach also promotes sustainable practices like using green manure, minimizing burning, and recycling agricultural waste. Additionally, it includes cost management, task division among members, group marketing, and establishing buyer connections to broaden sales opportunities for their produce.
Looking ahead, the Mueang Kanchanaburi District Agricultural Office has charted a five-year development plan from 2027 to 2031. This plan aims to transform the group into "Phu Pradu Development Cassava Large-Scale Farming Company Limited," with the objective of producing superior quality cassava, implementing innovative management practices, linking markets, and adding value to their produce.
