Pattani: A dramatic operation unfolded in Nong Chik District, Pattani Province, as authorities successfully captured a member of the Perwira suicide fighter group. The suspect, fearing for his life, surrendered to authorities after a tense standoff at a religious school. A significant cache of firearms and ammunition, including a .38 caliber revolver with 56 rounds, was seized during the operation.
According to Thai News Agency, the operation began early in the morning at 5:00 AM, involving a coordinated effort by over 30 personnel from three different agencies. The operation was led by top officials, including the Deputy Director of the Peacekeeping Center of the Internal Security Operations Command Region 4 Forward, the Commander of the Southern Border Provinces Ranger Force, and the Commander of the 43rd Ranger Task Force. Their mission was to surround and search Darud Taqwa School, acting on intelligence that suspects wanted under the Emergency Decree were hiding there.
Local village headmen and religious leaders played a crucial role in the operation, assisting in negotiations with those inside the school. An announcement was made for individuals to identify themselves and exit the building. Although around 20 students complied, the main target remained hidden, prompting further negotiation efforts.
At approximately 6:00 AM, after renewed attempts to communicate, the suspect, identified as Mr. Muhammad Hafiq Mahama, emerged from the dormitory. The 29-year-old from Bajoh District, Narathiwat Province, surrendered peacefully, walking onto the road with raised hands. A subsequent search of his apartment uncovered the revolver and ammunition. Mr. Mahama confessed to the possession of the firearm, which is suspected to have been acquired through illegal means. Authorities are conducting forensic examinations to ascertain any links to previous crimes.
Further investigation revealed that Mr. Mahama had been hiding at the school for over ten days. His criminal history includes combat training and historical studies in a neighboring country before joining the “Pervira” group. Authorities suspect he had accomplices who provided him refuge and possibly plotted further attacks in the region. Efforts are underway to locate and prosecute these individuals.
