Bangkok: "Sophon" inaugurated the "Debate Council Season 3" stage, emphasizing the principles of "Su Ji Pu Li" (righteousness, wisdom, and reasoning) to nurture rational thinking in youth. Mr. Sophon Saram, President of the Parliament and Speaker of the House of Representatives, led the opening ceremony of the creative social debate competition for the fiscal year 2026. The event, held at the Parliament Building, marked the beginning of the round of 16 for Season 3.
According to Thai News Agency, the Speaker expressed pride in the realization of the "Parliamentary Debate" project. This initiative aims to shape young individuals into responsible adults, adhering to the principles of "Su Ji Pu Li," which translate to virtue, discipline, and purity. Mr. Sophon likened youth to "soft saplings," emphasizing the importance of guiding them in the right direction, particularly in the digital age where wise communication is crucial.
The Speaker highlighted the presence of a distinguished panel of judges to ensure fairness throughout the competition. He underscored the role of this platform in fostering an understanding of justice among young participants, which is vital for societal harmony.
Mr. Sophon also shared his views on paying tribute, referencing the Buddhist tradition of a silent tribute to honor worthy individuals. He cited Her Majesty Queen Sirikit and Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha as exemplary figures who embody compassion and equality, setting positive examples for society.
Addressing an incident at Thepsirin Nonthaburi School, Mr. Sophon extended his condolences and support to those affected. He emphasized the importance of fostering a "society of love," where the debate competition is not about winning but about nurturing love, understanding, and reason among the youth. He expressed a desire to extend the project to remote areas, providing opportunities for skill development and societal improvement.
Mr. Sophon reiterated his commitment to addressing drug issues through legislative efforts in the next parliamentary session. He emphasized the importance of developing key skills in youth, such as "listening, thinking, questioning, and writing" (Su Ji Pu Li). Reflecting on his teaching background, he advised students to view teachers as second parents and emphasized the principle of "loving school like home, loving work like life."
Concluding his remarks, Mr. Sophon expressed hope that the "Debate Forum" would be instrumental in educating young people to use reason, constructive language, and collaboration to build a society rooted in love, justice, and understanding.
